Dubai beachgoers shocked after dead cow washes ashore; municipality removes carcass and reassures public safety

Send Push
A shocking discovery at Al Mamzar Beach in Dubai left beachgoers stunned on Saturday when a dead cow was found washed up on the rocks. The incident quickly gained attention, especially after several residents, concerned about potential health risks, reported the carcass to local authorities.

The shocking discovery

The unusual scene unfolded on Saturday evening at the popular Mamzar Beach Park, when visitors noticed a strong odour near the rocky stretch of the beach.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Tasmiyah, a Dubai resident who was at the beach with her family, described the moment of discovery:

“As we walked over to the rocks, we were hit by a terrible smell. After climbing the rocks and going over to the other side, we saw a big, dead cow. It was very sad and disturbing,” she said.

Concerned, Tasmiyah immediately alerted lifeguards stationed at Flamingo Beach around 5pm, who assured her they would investigate.

“They said they’ll look into it and then after 25 minutes a police boat came and took a picture of the scene,”
she added.

Her uncle also reported the incident through the Dubai Police mobile application, while the student herself contacted Dubai Municipality, which confirmed that a team would be dispatched to handle the situation. At the time, the carcass remained lodged among the riprap rocks near the shore.

Soon after, photos and videos began circulating online. A Reddit user shared an image of the animal with the caption: “Out of everything I could expect on a beach, found a dead cow. Now I have no clue how it even ended up on Mamzar Beach.”

Another user replied under the same post: “I did, about after half an hour, two police on a boat came and took the situation in their hand... It was reeking very bad.”

The online posts reflected the same shock and confusion that beach visitors felt on-site.
Swift municipal response and investigation

In a statement reported by Gulf News, Dubai Municipality confirmed that its specialised teams promptly removed the deceased animal once it was alerted to the situation. The civic body clarified that “preliminary assessments indicate that the animal may have fallen from a passing vessel in open waters.”

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine how the animal ended up along the city’s shoreline, though officials highlighted that transporting cows by sea is common, and such incidents, while rare, can occur during maritime transfers.

According to Gulf News, officials acted “quickly to remove the carcass and assess the situation,” ensuring that the area was cleared soon after the initial report. By Monday, the beach had returned to normal, with regular patrols continuing as part of standard operations.

Public concern and health assurances

Despite the municipality's swift action, the discovery triggered concern among residents and tourists, some of whom feared that the presence of the animal might cause health issues, especially if the water was contaminated. Many took to social media to express their surprise, and the incident quickly became a topic of local conversation.

However, Dubai Municipality was quick to reassure the public that there was no cause for alarm. In their official statement, the municipality emphasized that there were no risks of environmental or biological contamination from the incident. They further stressed that they maintain continuous monitoring of Dubai's beaches and marine areas to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and environmental protection.

"The incident poses no risk of environmental or biological contamination," the statement read. “The municipality continues to conduct round-the-clock monitoring of Dubai’s beaches and marine areas in line with its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of public health, safety, and marine ecosystem protection.”

Ongoing investigation
While the authorities have provided an initial assessment suggesting the cow might have fallen off a passing ship, Dubai Municipality confirmed that investigations are still underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. For now, the situation is being managed, and there is no immediate cause for concern regarding public health or safety.

As of the latest updates, the carcass has been removed, and authorities are working to ensure that similar incidents are prevented in the future. Despite the initial shock, residents and visitors have been reassured that the beach remains safe for recreation.
