“Thank you for choosing us”- Gabrielle Union reflects on her surrogacy journey in an emotional birthday post for daughter Kaavia

For Gabrielle Union and her NBA husband Dwyane Wade , their little daughter Kaavia James is world for them. After struggling with infertility for a long time, the Bring It On star chose to go ahead with surrogacy to embrace motherhood. Gabrielle recently celebrated Kaavia’s birthday and even wrote a heart touching message for her little one. She shared a slew of pictures with her adorable daughter Kaavia and husband Dwyane Wade on Instagram.


Despite being busy with Hollywood projects and NBA collaborations, both Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade always manage to take out time for Kaavia. An advocate for equal rights for women and mental health, the 53-year-old actor has openly spoken about her trials with infertility in interviews and podcasts.


Gabrielle Union posts an emotional message for daughter Kaavia’s 7th birthday
Gabrielle Union shared a heartfelt post marking the 7th birthday of her daughter Kaavia James. She shared pictures along with her husband Dwyane Wade and her daughter and wrote,

“Kaavia James Union Wade where do we even begin and where has the time gone? It’s your golden 7th birthday and every bit of you from head to toe shines just as bright. From the moment we knew you were coming, all we could do was imagine who you’d look like, how you’d sound, what your personality would be, and baby you have not disappointed. At all.”

During an interview with Marie Claire in May 2025, Gabrielle Union-Wade opened up on her infertility struggles and surrogacy journey . She said,

“Every single person’s surrogacy journey is different. It’s like any time there’s any kind of variance in the experience, it’s, ‘See, I told you. You shouldn’t explore this option to expand your family.’ But for me, it felt like failure. My body failed. It just felt like such a f---ing public humiliation.”

Gabrielle Union spoke about her decision to have her daughter Kaavia, 7, with Dwyane Wade through surrogacy. She revealed the process made her question her body.
