It is easy to overlook cleaning sink taps, but they are a hotspot for germs, soap scrum, fingerprints and even limescale which can tarnish the metal if you do not scrub it away. Limescale often appears in bathrooms and kitchens and is made up of the minerals from hard water. Over time, they can form a crusty stain that clings tightly to a surface.
If you keep forgetting to clean sink taps then limescale can eat away at the metal, making them look dull and dirty even if the rest of your sink is spotless. White vinegar can remove limescale but it is best not to use it on stainless steel, and instead James Sturmay, a expert from Frescavida, has revealed that lemons are a simple way to clean taps. James said: "If you prefer a fresh scent, rub half a lemon over the tap and buff it with a dry cloth. The citric acid helps remove any leftover residue and gives the tap a natural gloss."
Citric acid naturally comes from lemon juice, and it helps break down the minerals in limescale and loosen the stain so it is easier to wipe away.
Limescale can often be stubborn but using lemons makes cleaning taps a really quick chore that can be done in roughly 10 minutes.
Lemons are also naturally antibacterial so will also get rid of any germs, as limescale can encourage bacteria to stick to a surface which will make washing your hands less effective.
It can also helps restore the shine on metal so your taps will gleam by the time you are finished cleaning without having to spend any money at all.
All you need to do is slice a lemon in half, and place one of the slices on the spout of a tap. Use the half to squeeze juice onto the limescale stains.
Use hair bobbles or rubber bands to secure the lemon placed on the tap, then leave it for roughly 10 minutes.
It is important to give the lemon juice time to dissolve the limescale minerals and soften the build up.
Once the time is up, gently scrub the tap with some warm water and a cloth then the limescale should quickly disappear.
Alternatively, you can soak a cloth in lemon juice instead of using fruit, but the fresher the citric acid is the more effective it will be.
