Although you may be winding down your gardening antics now that autumn is here, you might still have a few pesky weeds hanging around your patio and driveway. While you could leave them to take over your garden, it's better to get rid of them as soon as possible.
During the spring and summer months, killing weeds is almost like a full-time job. But, sadly, weeds don't just disappear as soon as summer does, and weeds can run wild in autumn - potentially damaging next year's garden in the process. Having found an effective solution, gardening enthusiast Kelly Widdis turned to the Mrs Hinch Gardening Tips to share her success.
She wrote: "I've recently learned that salt on patio weeds kills them off even to the roots, which I've tried on my driveway, and it works a treat. The weeds haven't come back for years.
"I just used normal table salt. I poured and gently brushed the salt into the cracks. I then followed with a kettle of boiling water to help dissolve the salt quickly.
"Be careful though, it does kill everything, so be mindful around plants and edges of lawn, etc."
Fellow group members also had success with using salt on paving weeds. Shirley Dewwy said: "I can totally agree, tried this and worked within hours. Amazing."
Jackie Hinge commented: "I did this last year, wanting to avoid chemicals, and it worked a treat. No measuring, just pour the salt on the weeds."
Sarah Morse wrote: "I sprinkled salt on the weeds and within an hour they were turning brown and dying."
Salt works to kill weeds by breaking down plant cells by pulling out moisture, leading to quick dehydration.
The salt basically interferes with water balance in plant tissues and blocks nutrient absorption, causing weeds and any other plant it comes in contact with to die.
